An indoor grill is a good compromise to get some grilled flavor when the weather is not good, but it won’t beat a real outdoor grill.
Everyone loves to have food done on the grill. It has a fresh, natural flavor that you cannot beat, and it is healthy, too. Unfortunately, most of us cannot grill outside all of the time due to winter and other bad weather. That is where indoor grills become a very wonderful thing. You can enjoy much of the flavor of an outdoor grill but do it inside with very little odor or smoke.
It is very important to point out in any article about grills that you should never, under any circumstances use an outdoor grill indoors or in a garage! Outdoor grills give off a lot of carbon monoxide. It is an invisible and odorless gas and just a little of it in a small space can kill you.
The next thing to keep in mind is that an indoor grill is really just a compromise appliance. You are not going to get the same flavor on the indoor grill as the outdoor grill, unless you have an expensive, gas, vented indoor grill.
An indoor grill also does not produce food that is any safer or better or healthier than what you can get on the outdoor grill. Any grilling can produce byproducts that cause cancer, whether it is indoor or outdoor. You just need to take care that you do not burn and overcook your food.
Also, an indoor grill is not going to give you less fat in your food than any outdoor grill. Many indoor grills are advertised to be ‘fat reducing’ and claim that they can cut the fat in a hamburger by 4% over frying it in a pan. A typical pan fried burger will lose about 50% of its fat, so the indoor grill will reduce it by about 52%. This is not a significant difference.
This is not to say that indoor grills are a bad thing. Not at all. They are a good replacement for an outdoor grill when the weather is bad.
There are basically two types of indoor grill: the open one and the folding contact product. The open grill is very much like what you have outside. You will need to flip your steak or burger to cook both sides of it. The other type you can get is a sort of Panini press. They are very popular overseas and make a great sandwich. This is not really a grill in the traditional sense, but they do take less work than a regular grill and the sandwiches are great.
